Frugal tip: Cheaper than MoneyGram or Western Union

So you are tired of paying exorbitant  fees when trying to send money to your relatives in Uganda?

Try this instead

1.       Open a Bank of America account

2.       Send your loved (trusted) one your checking debit card  + password.
Going forward, you will have to survive with using your savings debit card because the bank does not give out two credit cards for one person

3.       Instruct loved one to withdraw money from Standard Chartered ATM. They will withdraw dollar amt in Uganda Shillings.
Benefits

-          You will only get charged foreign transaction and ATM fees which are at most $9. This is still cheaper than either Money gram or Western Union

-          You can monitor all transactions online in case something goes wrong.

Laker's Fan Club: Applications welcome

Dear pals,

Let’s be honest with ourselves here.

You are a winner. You are willing to put in the work to get to the top.

And that’s exactly what the Laker’s franchise represents.

Admit it, deep down, you love Kobe. You brush it off in public and try to look cool by accusing him of rape.

But you know you cannot ignore his Jordanesque skills.

Which is why I’m excited to announce the grand opening of the Laker’s fan club.

Free to everyone. Celtics crossover fans especially wanted.

SQL Server 2005 troubleshooting

Today I got this error message when trying to connect remotely to my SQL server.

Connect to Server
Cannot connect to KatmaiCTP6.
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233)

After talking to the SQL dev, we resolved this by modifying the settings in my SQL Surface Area Configuration.

Start>All Programs>MS SQL Server 2005>Configuration Tools>SQL Server Surface Area Configuration

Modifying locked workspaces in TFS

Go to this location on your machine and modify the VersionControl.config file

NBA playoffs 09 - the Year of the Underdogs

Hands down, these are the most exciting playoffs yet!

I’ve been watching NBA playoff action since 2000 and in my 9 yrs of watching, I’ve not seen a playoffs that has been decided by so many last minute shots. Some key plays/players

Ray Allen vs Ben Gordon – Ray seems to be the greater husky so far. I still think Celtics are going to lose these series

Shoutout to my hommy Jeremy Lwanga who is a replica of Ben Gordon.

Andre Iguoaaadalala – very underated NBA player with the thickest neck ever + Andre Miller = philly steak

Blazers..what a disappointment, Oden continues to be a bust.

Mavs Vs. Spurs – the only reason I root for the Mavs is because JJ Barea is repping for Northeastern Uni, my alma mater..go Huskies

Hawks vs Heat – mediocre team = boring series, I only watch these series to see the Hawk mascot flying through the arena

Rockets vs Blazers – poor Tmac is gonna miss out on the curse of the first round finally being lifted. Am I the only one who thinks that Kyle Lowry looks like Mase?

And ofcourse, the mighty Lakers are poised to take the championship this year!

Can’t wait for the finals…

Mugabe

Life has a way of continually teaching me a lesson even in death.
Yesterday, a good friend of mine, Mugabe Kaijuka was buried in his hometown following his death on Tuesday. A group of friends of mine that went to primary school with him and live in America got together on a conference call not to mourn but to celebrate his life and recall good memories of him. We told jokes abt how he seemed to have it all for as long as we'd known him. Mugabe came to Kampala Parents' school in P5 straight from "outside countries" and immediately all the girls were fascinated by his accent.
As if that was not enough, he was one of the brightest students and won the admiration of the teachers. Add on to that, he was an athlete that won all the races on sports day. To top it off, he was selected to be our Headboy in P7. Did I mention that he was the top student in Uganda in the national exam (Primary Leaving Exam).
Yet despite all these attributes, Mugabe's top quality was definitely the fact that he was real. He had a way with people, he spoke to you and made you feel like you were his best friend..and not in a manipulative way, a sincere way. He was a genuine person that liked to have a good time. Even with all his stature, he managed to have friends in all places.
Mugabe truly left a void in our lives, but more importantly left us with an important life question - What will your legacy say abt you once you are gone?
'Gabs' may be physically gone but his spirit truly lives on.
Thank you Mugabe for leaving with us this important realization.

Uganda vs USA

I was in Wholefoods today trying to buy some herbal tea for Sandra who has a cold and I noticed how expensive organic food is in teh USA. It's now a trend to buy organic food.

Where I come from it's all reverse..Processed food is in! Organic food i.e. dodo aka greens, posho aka millet flour, beans and gnuts are food for the poor. The successful dine out at expensive Chinese restaurants or eat fast food everyday. The typical peasant almost has a vegetarian diet out of economic hardship, little does she know that thousands of miles away, in teh wealthiest nations of this planet, her fellow human beings are struggling to eat like her in order to improve their lifestyle.

I pay lots of monthly fees to my gym, Planet Fitness--okay..scrap that, Planet Fitness is only $10 a month but still, other ppl pay lots of monthly fees to go the gym to shed off those bad calories they sustain from American food.
Fly over to Uganda and Wasswa is struggling to walk to work everyday, wishing earnestly that he had a car to survive the blazing heat..he hates his skinny frame that is a result of his long manual commute. Little does he know that miles away, people pay to do what he despises.

When they said History repeats itself, I never quite understood the saying, but now I think I do. While the third world tries to hard to follow in the footsteps of the developed world, the people in the developed world are slowly turning back to the habits of their ancestors in third world, the ways of Zinjanthropus.

Life's too short to worry

I just had a very deep talk with my friend Bala abt life. I'd like to capture this moment on silicon before it becomes a distant memory.

Life philosophy---> Don't work too hard, it doesn't pay, in the end, we're all dead anyway.

Whenever you find yourself worried abt a life situation, ask yourself this...When you come to the end of your life, you will ask yourself, this thing that I was worried abt so much when I was 20, 30yrs young..was it really worth all that stress? Now you can stop worrying.
